Illuminating informal cross-border trade in processed small pelagic fish in West Africa

Abstract Trade in processed small pelagic fish and informal cross-border trade (ICBT) are linked to livelihood activities West Africa. Although these products being traded informally Africa, research on this topic is limited. This study builds a multi-partner supported ‘FishTrade’ initiative Africa illuminate the volume value of across Ghana–Togo–Benin (GTB) borders, socio-demographic determinants supporting participation profitability trade. We used structured survey focus group interviews obtain data from women traders, who handle entire three major Ghanaian markets where ICBT concentrated. Our results showed borders constitutes significant economic potential, estimated at about 6000 MT US$14 million market per annum. Furthermore, factors, such as traders’ years experience membership an unofficial cooperative, positively influence profitability, but access information negatively affects participation. However, geographical distance, large household size micro-finance affect profitability. findings that consumers’ purchasing power, taste preference, ICBT’s opportunities shared heritage connection significantly form trading along GTB borders. conclude represents untapped potential for local highlight need further topic.
